Elounda - the little fishing village (only in winter)

Port of Elounda

Elounda is located just 10 km north from Agios Nikolaos, northern Crete and in winter it turns for a quiet fishing village after the hectic tourist season. From the port you see also Spinalonga- island, the leper island which I was writing earlier  ( Spinalonga ). Hotels, most taverns and shops are closed by now, it must be very opposite from summer! Again one more time im happy to be here off season without the crowd...

Elounda is heavily visited by richer people, due the luxury resorts are built here, even the royal family of Saudi Arabia comes almost every year here on vacation. Elounda´s fame in tourism was getting big in the 1970´s when BBC produced television series "Who payes the ferryman" and it was filmed in and around Elounda. In 2009 the Greek Mega Channel started to film television series in Plaka and Elounda area called "To Nisi", which is based on a novel from Victoria Hislop "The Island". It is one of the most expensive Greek television productions ever with a budget of €4 million. I wish to be able to see these series one day!!!

    Kiitos upeista kuvista, taas kerran!
